Aug. 3, 2009 - PRLog -- WATERBURY, Conn. – To Steve Dwyer, supporting the Waterbury, Conn., community – where his ColorTyme store is based - means everything to him and his team.  Recently, he and his staff donated a Whirlpool stove to the Waterbury Youth Service System – a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the overall well being of children, youth and families.

“This just made sense to me.  I love the people in this city and I felt compelled to support the Waterbury Youth Service System with this donation,” said Dwyer.  “I had a stove that was a perfect fit for one of their programs and it’s exciting to see a void that’s now filled.  I think supporting organizations like this is essential.”

The Youth Service System is supported by grants from city, state and federal agencies.  This includes support from foundations, such as the United Way, and the generosity of corporate and individual donors.  The non-profit agency serves 4,000 clients annually through a broad spectrum of programs that address issues impacting today's youth and their families.

“The program that we’re going to use the stove for is called ‘Linking Academics to Life,’” said Kelly Cronin, executive director for the Waterbury Youth Service System.  “This program has three different parts that the kids can choose from, including a journalism piece, technical media with our computers, and entrepreneurship.  We have areas set up where the kids are learning about electrical work, plumbing, painting and different things like that.  Attached to all that is a kitchen where we will use the stove and provide a small culinary program.  This will help our kids learn some life skills and help them become self-sufficient.”

Recently, the organization received government grant money to employ teens for the summer.  To help with that, Dwyer is organizing further donations.

“I plan to donate two computer printers and a living room set,” explained Dwyer.  “They recently received a bunch of computers from IBM, so the printers will come in handy.  It feels good to help further the Youth Service System mission, which is focused on developing healthy young people in the Waterbury community and surrounding areas.”
