By: Yael Politis Author: Yael Politis Pages: 441 Published by YouWriteOn.com/ ISBN:978-1-84923- In 1944 in British Mandate Palestine, Tonia's parents take the family to live on a struggling religious kibbutz in isolated Gush Etzion. Fifteen-year- Much of this novel takes place in Kfar Etzion, during its establishment, siege, and fall to the Arab Legion. While the characters are fictional, historical events are accurately portrayed. This is one of a handful of English novels that take place in British Mandate Palestine and the only one that tells the story of Kfar Etzion. Another part of the story takes place in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where Tonia tries to build a new life. The Lonely Tree has received excellent feedback from Amazon customers, from other writers on the writers' website of the London Council of the Arts, and on the author's blog. Examples: "Yael Politis is most talented. She writes with a warmth and artistry that drew me into the world of The Lonely Tree as if by the flick of a switch." ""I found this novel delightful and engaging, despite the downbeat nature of the most of the events." "While reading this novel I kept feeling that it should be made into a movie. The settings, atmosphere, and dialogue are so realistic, that one feels transported to the time and place." "I would like to highly recommend The Lonely Tree. The characters in this novel about life in Palestine and the early years of the State of Israel are particularly well-drawn, utterly believable. I heard each voice distinctly in my mind as I read, as if I knew them all personally." "The Lonely Tree is a beautifully crafted novel. The author brings her characters to life in its first pages. I found it refreshing to read a story about this period (starts before the creation of the State of Israel, when the British held the Mandate for Palestine, and ends after the Six Days War) with an original perspective and no apparent axe to grind." "I was riveted. I was right there in all the action, all of which unfolded naturally. Seamlessly, in fact." "I think somebody ought to make a movie out of this book. It's a good, old-fashioned, well-told story, with a beginning, a middle, and an end. The characters really come to life – easy to imagine, easy to grasp the dilemmas of their lives. " "I agree with the other reviewers. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It provides a perspective on the era covered that I found totally original and refreshing." "Well done. The story is engaging, the characters well-rounded, and the setting fascinating. I felt as if I knew Tonia, and wanted to see what was going to happen next. In short, a good read that lets you learn some things you didn't know along the way." "As a Scandinavian, who has read Exodus and some other stories about Israel, this was a book that was more personal and enlightening in a different way to me."
