May 10, 2009 - PRLog -- Roman Jewelers in Flemington will host “A Night at the Opera” on Saturday, May 16, 2009, starting at 7:00 PM in the atrium of Renaiassance Plaza (site of the Flemington store).  This musical event will feature a gallery of arias and art songs performed by members of The Opera Project, with selections from a variety of popular operas.

The Opera Project is a musicians’ forum to develop and showcase the superb professional and emerging talent of the Delaware Valley and surrounding New York and Philadelphia areas. The group is comprised of both experienced and new opera talent.   Concerts raise money to restore the historic Hook and Hastings tracker organ of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Lambertville.

The first auditions for The Opera Group started in June, 2008.  There was such an enthusiastic response to the project from a large number of extremely talented singers that the scope of the project was changed.  Originally planned as an opera workshop, the focus of The Opera Project then became one of presenting exciting opera performances

The founders of the group include Walt MacNicoll and Deborah Maher, both long-term professional career opera singers who are residents of Hunterdon County; David Anckor, performer and teacher of piano and voice; and Michael Corain, organist at Stockton Presbyterian Church.  Father Richard Townley of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Lambertville has supported the group by allowing them to rehearse and perform in the church.

The concert on May 16th at Roman Jewelers will be in two acts, with an intermission for light refreshments.  The event will also feature a showing of original artworks by regional artists.  Artists featured will include Deborah Maher who, in addition to a successful career throughout the United States and Europe as an opera singer, has also been a talented visual artist from an early age.  Her painting style is unique, but she was inspired by the works of Matisse, Picasso and Modigliani.

The works of Talia deLone Kennedy will also be shown.  Her paintings include watercolors from her travels in Ireland, Maine, Japan and Southeast Asia.  Some of her subjects include rice farmers in Bali, Kyoto residents stopping at a small river for respite, Irish hikers visiting Yeats’ Lake Isle of Innisfree and Thai fishermen.  Ms. deLone Kennedy’s works have been shown in many regional galleries, and she is also a career psychologist.

This event is open to the public.  The cost for a ticket is a $15.00 donation to The Opera Project. Tickets may be purchased at Roman Jewelers in Flemington, or at the door of the concert if seating remains (seating is limited). Please call 908-237-1223 for more information or to purchase tickets.
