Unique Chocolates Find Sweet Success Abroad

Gourmet buyers from around the world attended. “They were amazed that they were American and that they enjoyed them,” Schellhammer said of the dark chocolates, which are uniquely flavored with spices and herbs.
Damian Curzon-Price vouches for that success. He’s the managing director of Americattessen, a food distributor in Great Britain. He calls his company’s recent deal to sell Spice Rack Chocolates proof of his confidence.
Mary Schellhammer was confident when she arrived at the event. “I was ready,” she said. She had visited Europe a year earlier to study its finest chocolates, then returned home to Virginia to perfect the Spice Rack line.
The wife and husband share a dislike of fillings, so their chocolates are solid. She painstakingly experiments with combinations of flavors until the partners are satisfied with each. “I want people to look at chocolate like they would wine, to consider its complexity and depth,” she said.
Curzon-Price says Europe had never tasted anything like the fine chocolate mixed with such pairings as grapefruit-lavender, lemon-basil and apple-coriander. “Spice Rack Chocolates is really pushing the envelope,” he said.
The Schellhammers have even made these confections healthful: all are dairy-free, gluten-free, Vegan, and full of antioxidants.
