| Art Across the City 2009: Rehearsals commence to create the world’sSwansea will be awakened this week, with some unusual musical notes coming from the Sail Bridge over the River Tawe that connects east and west Swansea.
By: City and County of Swansea Artist Paul Granjon has teamed up with local dance group Dynion Dance and choreographer Douglas Comley to create a performance that sonically activates the bridge by the movements and rhythms of the dancers. The bridge will be ‘played’ as the opening performance of the Art Across the City event on Saturday 18 April at 6.15pm. This week the dancers will be testing out the rhythms and notes of the bridge and creating a performance that sees the bridge turn into the world’s biggest musical instrument. Artist Paul Granjon says “The sail bridge looks a little like a giant harp, and walking across can be quite sonic. I wanted to create a performance that brings the bridge to life” The performance, titled ‘Sail Bridge Music Action’ will be filmed and recorded and available to see at the National Waterfront Museum from 19 April – 10 May. “Swansea has historically bred much musical talent, and this new sound piece literally brings the architecture of the city to life, through sound and rhythm, reflecting the musicality of Swansea” said project manager Grace Davies. This extraordinary artwork is just one of the new commissions that respond to the city of Swansea, and form part of the ART ACROSS THE CITY event, organised by Locws International. Eight new commissions from international and welsh artists will be on display in public and outdoor venues across Swansea from 18 April – 10 May. Each artist has responded to Swansea in their artwork, drawing on a number of different elements from the city’s history, heritage, people and landscape as well as the current developments. Locws International: Locws International works with international and Welsh contemporary artists to create new visual artworks and projects that respond to the culture and heritage of the city of Swansea.
