Energy Star Consumer Report on Tankless Water Heaters

Energy Star has developed new criteria for water heaters (the last major appliance the program has yet to address) in a attempt to address the energy usage.

April 3, 2009 - PRLog -- According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), heating water accounts for 17% of  the national residential energy consumption. It is the third largest energy consumer behind AC units and kitchen appliances. As homeowners install luxuries that increase hot water usage, such as custom showers and Jacuzzis, the energy consumed to heat water will continue to rise.

Energy Star has developed new criteria for water heaters (the last major appliance the program has yet to address) in a attempt to address the energy usage. According to Energy Star criteria for water heaters, the United States is expected to save around $780 Million in energy costs while also avoiding 4.2 Million Tons of carbon dioxide emissions by the end of the 5th year in effect.

There are five categories of water heaters that will be eligible for the Energy Star label. These include the whole house gas tankless, advanced drop-in or integrated heat pump, solar and gas condensing, and high-performance gas storage. This year (2009) the Energy Star criteria will go into effect.

Department of Energy said "The Energy Star program empowers consumers to make smart energy choices that will save money and energy, and reduce our carbon footprint," Expansion of the Energy Star program to include water heaters will give Americans yet another way to more efficiently use energy in their homes and, in the interest of increasing energy security and addressing climate change, help further the President's goal of fundamentally changing the way this nation uses power.

Hopefully because of the value of the Energy Star program manufacturers will develop more efficient technologies and consumers will realize an Energy Star appliance will have better performance, use less energy and save money. Energy Star labels (according to a April 08’ report by EPA) influence more than 70% of all households in their purchasing decisions.

Over 9,000 organizations are partnered with Energy Star and are committed to improving the efficiency of their products for homes and businesses. After this recent update with water heaters the Energy Star label will now appear on more than 40 different consumer products. The Energy Star label along with the tankless water heater can greatly reduce your energy consumption by over 50%.
