Lost Souls Patients returning from 'Sleep Room' were drugged, experiments funded by CIA TORONTO - In the early 1960s, Tanya Kowalski, a 28-year-old evening head nurse on Ward Five at the Montreal Psychiatric Institute, becomes suspicious when she realizes that her patients’ mental health is not improving. Chief of Psychiatry is renowned Dr. Samuel B. Strachan who prescribes experimental drugs and electro-shock treatments for his vulnerable patients. Carol Lawlor's new book, Lost Souls, (published by iUniverse), is fiction, based on historical psychiatric events that took place at Montreal’s Allan Memorial Institute in the early 1960s where brainwashing techniques on unsuspecting patients were funded by the CIA. In Lost Souls, Tanya is determined to find out what horrors are happening to the patients after they return from the Sleep Room in a chemical-induced sleep, brought to an infantile state, brainwashed and reprogrammed with repeated tape-recorded messages. Dr. Strachan believed he could cure his patients by wiping out their bad behavior and reprogramming their behaviors. To solve the mystery and find justice and healing for the patients, Tanya teams up with Max Callaghan of The Montreal Gazette to write an exposé of Dr. Strachan and he is eventually brought to trial for his horrendous criminal acts.
