March 22, 2009 - PRLog -- Tulsa, OK – Bill Bartmann, self-made billionaire, has been doing a series of interviews on the essentials of business ownership.  During a recent interview, he discussed the advantages to starting a business and working at home.  As Bill explained, working at home offers many benefits, including freedom and flexibility; however, it does have a downside.  

Bill explained, “Before considering starting a home-based business, you need to determine if you have the necessary space needed to operate.  There could be legal issues or zoning requirements to consider, especially if you live in a condo or an apartment.  There could also be liability exposure for some types of businesses; you may need to look into purchasing additional insurance to protect yourself and your personal assets.”

Bill Bartmann also discussed the distractions of working from home.  Bartmann said, “Children are one of the biggest distractions; they do not understand that you are at work because you’re home.  They can burst in on you with complaints about siblings, problems at school or to ask you to fix their bike.  You may need to consider an additional telephone line or make it understood that teenagers cannot spend the afternoon on the phone with friends.  An At-home business changes everything; you will need to alter your lifestyle and require the support of your family in order to succeed.”

Bill also covered other issues to consider including sales skills, marketing skills and adequate knowledge of the area of business one is going into.  One must be prepared to be the boss, secretary, receptionist, business planner and business manager.  In many case, one is doing all of this while still being a parent too.  In conclusion, Bill Bartmann said, “When you operate a home-based business, your success depends on you alone.  There is no supervisor to consult with on a difficult project.  There are no other employees to have lunch with or visit with in the break-room.  It can get lonely at the top; therefore, I recommend networking with others who also have businesses that they operate from home.”
