Follow on Google News | Smoking Is Not Just Causing Lung Cancer, Combating Obesity And Summer Babies Are BiggerThis week the Daily Health Bulletin covers how smoking increases the risk of not just lung cancer, how best to combat obesity and the interesting phenomena of bigger summer babies.
By: Kirsten Whittaker, Editor Daily Health Bulletin So, in this week’s Daily Health Bulletin we cover some of the implications of this new research. Obesity is another huge health concern for all developed countries, and if you'll pardon the bad pun, it's a problem that's getting bigger all the time. Recent figures have the prevalence of obesity at 33.3% for men; 35.3% for women, and kids and adolescents around 16.3% are obese. TV, computers and video games have made us all more sedentary than any other generation in history, but that's not the whole of the story. In another intriguing study, new research reveals that mothers are able to pass on their learning experiences to their children, things they learned even before they became pregnant. This idea may dramatically change how we think of inheritance. It may well be more than just genetics - blue eyes or blonde hair - it might also include hard-learned experience. Also, some interesting new work suggests that the time of year your baby is born might have something to do with his or her future height and strength. Making use of the wealth of data from the 'Children of the 90's Project', the Bristol University researchers studied babies born in 1991 and 1992, over 7,000 in all, and came to some fascinating conclusions. And finally we ended the week by taking a look at new research that shows artificial light may increase the risk of developing prostate cancer.
