Follow on Google News | Moolchand launches Centre for Interventional Radiology™Moolchand Medcity, NCR’s leading healthcare services provider, has achieved yet another milestone with the launch of Centre for Interventional Radiology™ here at its campus.
By: Media Coordinator Interventional Radiology (IR) is a subspecialty of radiology, providing minimally invasive treatments performed under guidance of x-ray fluoroscopy, ultrasound or computed tomography. Under image guidance, through a small hole (less than 2mm nick in the skin) they guide small instruments such as needles and catheters (tubes that measure just a few millimeters in diameter) through the blood vessels or other body pathways to the site of a problem to treat or detect disease percutaneously (through the skin). IR procedures are an advance in medicine that often replaces open surgical procedures. They are generally easier for the patient because they involve no large incisions with less risk, less pain and shorter recovery time. Screening is useful in certain high-risk groups. This includes patients with diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking, high blood cholesterol and with family history of atherosclerotic problems and circulatory problems. Since Interventional radiology does not involve large incisions, it is less invasive than other procedures. In majority of cases, local anaesthetic is used in place of general anaesthesia and most of the procedures are done as an out-patient and do not require hospital admission or require only short stay. Thus, these procedures are less expensive than surgeries or other alternatives. It helps in treating and assisting an integral part of various clinical procedures, finding a role in vascular diseases, oncology, stroke management, women's health, paediatrics and back pain. According to Dr Ashwin Garg, “With change in time, there is an increasing prevalence of several diseases, with changing patterns and associated disabilities. To beat these grim odds, patients rely on a multidisciplinary team of physicians for their treatment. As technology advances and high-quality imaging equipment becomes more widely available, Interventional Radiology (IR) is able to offer patients and physicians a growing number of new treatment options”.
