Donna Lendzyk Advises Outsourcing To Spend More Time on What You Love

Eliminate the time consuming business tasks that are not your specialty by outsourcing them to someone who is up for the job. This will create more time for you to focus on other parts of your business.

When you first start your own business, you pretty much have to do it all yourself. Without the money to pay people to complete your unwanted tasks, these must be done on spend your own time. Once you get even a little bit of success, however, the time comes to start outsourcing.

Most likely, you are probably not good at everything that has to be done to make your business succeed. And even if you are, you probably do not enjoy all of it. Outsourcing allows you to take some things off your plate, give them to someone who does get excited about them, and free up time you can use to do those things you do enjoy.

If you are not sure that you can afford to outsource, calculate the opportunity cost.  Consider how much you are likely to spend hiring someone to do your taxes or format your e-newsletter. Think about the time it would take you to do the same thing, and how much you would charge for the same time. If you are losing more money in time than it would pay to have someone else do it, you definitely need to outsource that project.

Even if it will cost you more money to have someone else do the project than you can make it the time it will take them to do it, it's still a good idea to let go some of those tasks you are not crazy about. These tasks can add unnecessary stress, and switching gears to those projects can throw.  You might not be as productive on days you are dealing with tasks that are out of your element.

If you outsource no other task, bookkeeping and accounting should be first on your list. It will make you feel so much better you'll wonder why you waited so long.  One mistake in this area can take even more time out of your schedule, and it is best to have a professional do it right the first time.

Make a list of mundane tasks that need to be done but that you don't like doing and that aren't really part of building your business and making more money. Consider whether a professional or someone else could help.  Explore your options and slowly work to get more of those tasks off your desk, leaving your schedule and mind free to do the work you really need to do.
