Hoooowl At The Moon!

Celebrate on October 19 with Wolf Awareness Week

Oct. 17, 2008 - PRLog -- Mount Pleasant, S.C. – For some people, celebrating an animal with sharp fangs, long claws, and the ability to kill you with one deadly bite to the neck might sound crazy.  However, to most nature enthusiasts, wolves are much more than a terrifying howl ringing out in the quiet night.  Wolves are constantly defending their territory against other ferocious forest dwellers with even more pull than the head wolf, and sometimes their efforts lose out to deforestation and development. Wolf Awareness Week, from Oct. 19 through 25, is the perfect time to teach children about being kind to their environment, as well as the animals that live in their own backyards.

One Wolf Howls (Sylvan Dell Publishing, to be released in Spring of 2009), by Scotti Cohn, and illustrated by Susan Detwiler, dives into the harsh forests where wolves are the kings and the rest of the forest is just their playground.  Cohn’s book follows a pack of wolves throughout the year as they dance in the winter show, raise their young, and howl at the full moon.  One Wolf Howls will take you to the deepest, darkest, most dangerous parts of the forest where only one Scotti Cohn can take you.

Fun Facts about Wolves:
•   Wolves have 42 teeth and mainly dine on large, hoofed animals, such as deer, moose, and caribou.
•   A wolf pack’s territory size ranges greatly depending on geography and habitat development.  In Minnesota and the northern United States, their territory can be as little as 25 to 100 square miles while in uninhabited areas of Canada and Alaska, each pack can have a territory of 300 to almost 1000 square miles.
•   The main threats to the wolf population in the United States and Canada are habitat destruction, habitat development by humans, or human persecution.
•   Wolves gestate for about two months and when they are born, they only weigh one pound!  They are usually born in litters of about four or six pups.
