FBI Farms plans to ease the wallets of American commuters and consumers by producing food and biodiesel.
By using a system called Aquaponics they pump water from their water source, put it into fish ponds where it becomes fertilized and then the water travels into their fields. By using this system they can use the same water multiple times, which comes in very useful considering that they are growing food and fuel in the middle of the desert. In their fields they grow a plant new to American’s called Jatropha. This plant produces an uneatable fruit with seeds that contain large amounts of oil. This oil can then be used to refine biodiesel, a clean renewable fuel that can power a diesel engine with minor modification to the engine, if the biodiesel is used in its purest form, B100. If mixed with petrol diesel, B80 or B20, the engines usually require no modification. They estimate that the biodiesel will be sold to US consumers at around $3.50 a gallon “Fleets such as Safeway and Petco have already begun using biodiesel in there trucks and now with airlines and major shipping ports taking an interest in greener cleaner fuels”, says Kelly Reardon, President “We should be able to move forward with a very green future.” In between the Jatropha FBI plants vegetables and fruits such as tomatoes, eggplants, lettuces, corn, melons, and a large variety of other fruits and vegetables. Livestock such as fish, pigs and chickens allows the farm to produce even more inventory. “Here at Farming Biodiesel Inc we are committed to creating a renewable clean alternative to petrol diesel. By reclaiming desert waste lands and turning them into profitable farms the effect is immediate on the local economy. We can provide jobs, housing, and health insurance to over 1000 people per 1000 acres of farmland.” says Michael Reardon, Farming Director / Vice President of FBI Farms. By using a crop that is not meant for consumption FBI Farms will help the US ease off of other crops such as corn and sugar cane that are currently being used to produce ethanol. “I just don’t think that we should be using something that could feed thousands to power our cars, we knew that there was a better way to go” says Christian Barrios, Marketing Director / Secretary of Farming Biodiesel Inc. With Jatropha making an impact on local and national news agencies and having a life span of 50 years without replanting, Jatropha farming may be a big factor on how farmers will decide on future crops.
