Directory submissions are an easy and quick way to build link saturation on search engines online without having to spend too much money.

Advantages

•   For permanent listings – links that have aged, much like a fine wine are valued by search engines and add not only to the ranking value of your domain but also to potential resale value.
•   Anchor text – chose the exact anchor text of inbound links to make sure that you are ranking well for the terms you have selected.
•   Screenshots – quality directories will offer automatic screenshots of your website which may help in providing referral visits to your site.
•   Deep links – are extremely valuable. Websites with many inbound, quality links to internal pages tend to perform significantly better than websites with inbound links to the home page only. It is highly recommended to gain deep links EVEN IF YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR THEM.

Watch Out For

•   Directories with rel= “nofollow” attributes – this means that the benefits of backlinks does not flow on to your website / web page. Commonly used with reciprocal link exchange.
•   Black hat SEO – directories which use unethical methods to achieve high rankings will be sandboxed by Google, which will mean that a link from those directories may be considered harmful to your rankings – “bad neighbourhood”
•   PR is not everything – Directories that have a PR of 0 can just be in their infant stages of development. If you spot a directory that looks good, and has potential, go for it. Quality directories with frequently changing content will gain rankings and PR quickly. Otherwise, be weary of suspiciously high ranking websites. PR is easy to forge using domain name hijacking.
•   Commercialisation – directories with large amounts of spam, be it banner ads or Google Adsense plastered all over, are good to avoid. These tend to be the sort of directories that do not really care about the quality and usability of their site, and are just out for cash.
•   Pending admission – if you have paid for a link, you are entitled to have your listing visible straight away.

Avoid most bulk submissions services as it is very hard to check the quality of the directories to which they submit. There is no guarantee that your website will be listed with these services. Lastly, directory submissions are a long term SEO strategy, not affiliate strategy so do not expect much inbound traffic from your directory submissions.
