Follow on Google News | Local Pharmacy Rallies District Students To Step On Diabetes: 59 Million Steps Walked in AprilFocus Express Mail Pharmacy, one of the nation’s leading on-line diabetes pharmacies and headquartered locally, waged war on diabetes by pioneering a National Health Education Program called Peds for Prevention™.
Focus’ initial goal of the “Peds for Prevention” program was to provide grant monies to school systems to sustain necessary diabetes and health education programs to keep students active. Focus committed approximately $25,000 in pedometers, educational materials, programs, and grant monies to Haverford School District. This fun, educational, and interactive program kicked-off at all five Haverford Township School District Elementary Schools during the month of April and the students held a contest to name their event “Stepping Out.” Students at each elementary school measured every step they took from April 1 through 23. The program was jointly sponsored by Focus Express Mail Pharmacy and the Haverford Township School District Education Foundation. Over 2,700 students, teachers, school administration and staff participated to help increase awareness of health issues, as well as the risks of both obesity and diabetes, while raising money for the Haverford School District Education Foundation with every step they took. Collectively, the five elementary schools “stepped” over 59 million steps together. “The “Peds for Prevention” program that we implemented at these five elementary schools should serve as a catalyst for national improvements in the quality of health education for young children,” said Joel Shpigel, R.Ph.,CEO and Co-Founder of Focus Express Mail Pharmacy. “Stepping Out” participants received a free pedometer provided by Focus Express Mail Pharmacy to measure every step taken during the program. On the last day of the program (Saturday, April 26) an award ceremony was held where students took their final 500 steps together at the Haverford Middle School Track and Field along-side Denise Nakano from the NBC 10 television station in Philadelphia, PA State Representative Greg Vitali, Shpigel, and his business partner Nick Braccia. In addition to the physical participation, the physical education teachers, the cafeteria staff, and Focus worked hand-in-hand to provide the students with exercise programs, healthy food choices, and weekly health tips coordinated to increase the power of knowledge for the young students. The themes for each week’s health awareness tips were: • Be Active • Eat Healthy • Understanding Diabetes • How to Avoid the Risks of Diabetes All students were able to take home educational materials on these topics to share with their families. Many students added steps to their daily routine by walking to and from school rather than taking the bus. One family joined the effort by purchasing additional pedometers for every family member so they could have a family competition. To celebrate each one’s accomplishments, students were recognized for their contribution to the Foundation and most importantly their participation. Medals were awarded to top “Steppers” About Focus Express Mail Pharmacy: Focus Express Mail Pharmacy brings more than 100 years of combined pharmacy experience and 50 years of specialized service focused on people with diabetes.
