Antonio Lamantea founded the Italian language school in Tropea, originally known as the Caffè Italiano Club, in 1993.  In 2004, the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research Department officially recognised the school as an accredited Italian language school and the name was changed to the Piccola Università Italiana.
