June 21, 2007 - PRLog -- Professional Interpretive Guide, Donna Hill, of Nanaimo, BC has developed a new touring option for those who prefer to travel by private vehicle or RV. Pop an audio CD, entitled “Nanaimo: A Sense of Place” in your music player or upload a file to your cellular phone for a private tour when you explore her home town.

As the third oldest city in British Columbia, Nanaimo has been the catalyst for some key events in Canadian History. For example, did you know that if it weren’t for the actions of one Nanaimo resident, BC would not be part of Canadian Confederation? Or that a local coal mine was the first to unionize in Canada?

At each 5 minute stop, Donna and her co-host and husband Bruce, use stories, sound effects, and questions to engage you and to weave the chronological history. Heritage streets and buildings, historical remnants of bygone days, interpretive signage, and scenic views are all part of the experience. Most are in plain sight but the significance is missed by an unknowing visitor.

The 35 minute loop is ideal for those want the nutshell version of Nanaimo’s history, and the one hour tour is for those that want the full deal. There is even an on-ship stop for those arriving by ferry and another while you wait for the ferry heading home! For the full loop, pack a lunch or be prepared to stop for a meal. You may want to do the tour over two days, to give you time to explore locations at your leisure.

Highlights of the tour:
First Nations
Hudson Bay Company Town
Life Around the Railway
Cemetery
Farms for Coal Miners
Pulp Mill and Education
Northfield Coal Town
North Nanaimo expansion & shopping malls
Newcastle Island Provincial Park

By the end of the experience, you will have a better sense of the people, places and events that led to Nanaimo being what it is today!

Bonus materials include a quiz to test what you learned, visitor information for after hours arrivals, city driving tips and a bibliography where you can learn more.

Audio Tours will become more popular as travelers discover the benefits of using them. Try out your first!
