Susan L. Taylor, senior editorial executive of Essence Magazine, will deliver 'Passionate Leadership' Keynote June 22 at the African American Business Summit 2007. Joining her will be FOX -11 Anchor Christine Devine and Councilwoman Jan Perry.

June 14, 2007 - PRLog -- Susan L. Taylor, senior editorial executive of Essence Magazine, will be delivering her powerful luncheon keynote: 'Passionate Leadership' at the African American Business Summit 2007. The luncheon will take place 12:00 noon on Friday, June 22, 2007 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, 1201 South Figueroa Street in Los Angeles, CA 90015.

Hosted by Nordstrom, this is an exciting luncheon event that will offer inspiration, excitement and motivation for all who attend. The mistress of ceremonies is Christine Devine, EMMY© award winning anchor of the ten p.m. weekday newscast on KTTV - FOX 11 in Los Angeles; Amelia Letcher, Divisional Vice President Corporate Diversity Affairs of Nordstrom will provide opening remarks; and special guest Jan Perry, Los Angeles City Councilwoman 9th District, will also address the attendees.

Taylor, who also writes the popular “In the Spirit” column for ESSENCE Magazine each month, is a fourth-generation entrepreneur. She was the founder of her own company, Nequai Cosmetics, before becoming Essence’s fashion and beauty editor and, in 1981, its editor-in-chief.

She is the author of three books: In the Spirit: The Inspirational Writings of Susan L. Taylor, Lessons in Living and Confirmation: The Spiritual Wisdom That Has Shaped Our Lives, the latter co-authored with her husband, Khephra Burns. She is a greatly sought-after speaker, delivering inspiring messages of hope and possibility that encourages one to reclaim and reorient our lives and society and create peaceful, productive, sustainable communities.

In 1999, Taylor became the first African American woman to receive The Magazine Publishers of America industry's highest honor:  The Henry Johnson Fisher Award. In 2002 Taylor was inducted into the American Society of Magazine Editors’ Hall of Fame, which celebrates the career-long records of excellence, creativity and impact of a select group of highly influential magazine journalists. Taylor's visionary leadership was acknowledged when NAACP President Bruce presented her with his first President's Award in 2006. She is an avid supporter of a host of organizations dedicated to moving the Black community forward. Her passion and focus are on creating equity in education and turning around the nation's failing schools, which, she says are "the pipeline to prison."

Taylor has received more than a dozen honorary degrees from numerous colleges and universities, including Lincoln University, Spellman College, Dillard University, Bennett College for Women, the University of Delaware and her alma mater, Fordham University.

About Councilmember Jan Perry
As Councilwoman of the Ninth District in Los Angeles, California, Jan Perry is in her second four-year term of office. Perry aims to provide greater access to basic city services, to expand after-school programs for kids, to increase green space, and to foster economic growth in all parts of the district. To date, she has successfully responded to numerous public works issues, and will continue to work together with the community to maintain and improve the functionality and aesthetics of the Ninth District.

She also serves as the Assistant Pro Tempore for the Los Angeles City Council, making her the first African-American woman to hold this position in the history of the City.

Christine Devine anchors the Los Angeles Fox 11 ten p.m. weekday newscasts. She has won eight Emmys©, and is known for her Wednesday's Child segment.
