| ![]() ImJustBrighton: The One Man Story Behind Brighton's Authentic VoiceFrom Spain to Sussex, one creator built Brighton's most recognisable independent media platform, capturing the city's real stories, community spirit and everyday life through ImJustBrighton.
By: Imjustbrighton | Tim Cucarella Behind the lens is Abdou El Wahid Graichi Cucarella, known across the city simply as Tim. He is the founder, editor, videographer, writer, designer and storyteller behind Brighton's most followed independent community media platform. His journey from long shifts as a teenager to building a brand recognized across the south coast is one of persistence, creativity and belonging. From Spain to Sussex Born in Spain in 1995 to a Spanish mother and Algerian father, Tim grew up without knowing his father closely. At fifteen, a message on Facebook changed everything and led him to the United Kingdom. What began as a visit became a permanent move, first to Haywards Heath and later Burgess Hill. Learning a new language and adapting to a new culture while managing financial pressure shaped his early years. To support himself while finishing school, he worked cleaning offices early in the morning and doing long shifts at Domino's Pizza in the evenings. Whenever he could afford a train fare, he travelled to Brighton. "Brighton felt free," he says. "The sea, the people, the golden hour it all felt right." By his early twenties, he moved to the city that had captured his heart. "Brighton gave me a place where I finally belonged." The Beginning of a Platform With a camera always in hand, Tim became a familiar face on the streets, filming performers, protests, sunsets and everyday moments. Social media was growing fast, and Brighton with its art, politics and coastal life was perfect content. But Tim never wanted the spotlight on himself. "I wanted it to be about the city," he explains. "Brighton had its own personality." In 2019, he launched @only.in.brighton, sharing clips of the city's quirks. The account took off quickly. In August 2021, he launched ImJustBrighton, a platform built to show Brighton exactly as it is unfiltered, local and real. The name carried a double meaning: portraying the city honestly, and the idea that one person, "just Brighton", could represent the city's collective character. He designed the branding himself: the bold red BRIGHTON box and the seagull that became one of the city's most recognizable online symbols.
