Two New Avoidable Airline Near Catastrophes - A Remedy

Experts Say a Simple Inexpensive Fix is Available But Not Even Being Considered

WASHINGTON - Sept. 29, 2025 - PRLog -- An American Airlines plane taking off at 167 mph had to slam on the brakes to avoid what would have been a catastrophic collision with a plane on the same runway. LINK (https://keyt.com/news/national-world/cnn-national/2025/09/29/american-airlines-plane-aborts-takeoff-at-los-angeles-international-airport-after-cargo-jet-crosses-the-runway-in-front-of-it/)  And in an unrelated by eerily similar situation, Southwest plane, jet narrowly avoid collision at Chicago's Midway Airport (https://www.msn.com/en-us/travel/news/watch-southwest-plane-jet-narrowly-avoid-collision-at-chicago-s-midway-airport/ar-AA1zMxdc?apiversion=v2&noservercache=1&domshim=1&renderwebcomponents=1&wcseo=1&batchservertelemetry=1&noservertelemetry=1).

Just days ago there was another potentially deadly near miss as two planes came within 10 feet of crashing into each others and killing hundreds at Nice airport in France
Horror Near Miss as Airliner 'Within 10ft' of EasyJet Plane About to Take Off
but it and all the many proceeding near misses, and actual crashes (including the mid-air collision near DCA which killed more than 65 passengers), are avoidable and could have been prevented easily and at virtually no cost, according to an expert, who says it deserves at least a simple test.

Fortunately there is something which can be up and running in a week, tested and improved in a month, and be operational at all major airports within a year, suggests  Banzhaf, an MIT-educated engineer with two U.S. patents and considerable experience with computers and vehicle safety.

An off-the-shelf already-available desktop computer using a modern AI program could provide a significant increase in air traffic safety - like having a lightning-fast genius providing instant real-time warnings - claims Banzhaf.

While it would be far from a complete solution to the current emergency, it would provide a significant additional margin of safety at least until longer range solutions can be put in place, he says.

It would be like having an ever-vigilant and indefatigable genius, who can project scenarios and provide warnings of potential collisions in milliseconds, looking over the shoulders of very busy controllers in airport towers.

Professor Banzhaf's detailed analysis of how such a supplemental warning system could work, and how it can be tested quickly and safely, has been featured in many forms on the Internet, including, for example:

Fortunately, the professor is no longer alone in calling for testing AI to making flying safer:
