Gold Ore Mining and Extraction Processes

PUDONG, China - Sept. 17, 2025 - PRLog -- Gold ore, a naturally occurring mineral source, is one of the most valued resources in the world due to its role in the production of pure gold. Found in deposits beneath the Earth's surface, gold ore has driven human exploration, technological innovation, and economic development for centuries. This article explores the composition of gold ore, methods of extraction, and its global economic impact.

What is Gold Ore?
Gold ore is a type of rock that contains traceable amounts of gold in its natural mineral form. This gold is often mixed with other minerals, such as quartz, chalcopyrite, and sulfides. Gold in ore form typically exists in two states:

Free-Milling Gold: Found in quartz veins or placer deposits and easily extracted using mechanical processes.

Refractory Gold: Locked within other minerals, requiring chemical or biological processes for its recovery.

The gold concentration in ore varies greatly. Economically viable gold ore typically contains about 0.5–5 grams of gold per ton of rock in lower-grade deposits, while high-grade ore can have several hundred grams per ton.

Gold Ore Mining and Extraction Processes
Extracting gold from the ore involves numerous processes, depending on the type of ore and its composition. These include:

1. Exploration and Mining
Open-Pit Mining: Suitable for shallow deposits, where large amounts of low-grade ore can be easily extracted.
Underground Mining: Used for high-grade gold deposits located deep beneath the Earth's crust.

2. Crushing and Grinding
The mined ore is crushed and ground into fine particles to liberate the gold from surrounding minerals.

3. Gold Ore Processing Technologies
Gravity Separation: For free-milling gold ore, this method uses gravity to separate dense gold particles from lighter impurities.

Cyanidation: The most common and economical process, which dissolves gold from ore using a diluted sodium cyanide solution.

Flotation: Used for sulfide-bearing gold ore, where air bubbles carry gold-rich minerals to the surface for collection.

BIOX (Biological Oxidation): An eco-friendly process where microbes digest sulfide minerals, releasing trapped gold.

4. Smelting and Refining
The extracted gold is purified by smelting and electrorefining to achieve up to 99.99% purity.

Gold ore (https://m.sbmchina.com/dynamic/gold-ore-types-and-extract...), the foundation of one of humanity's most coveted elements, continues to drive global economic and technological development. While it plays a vital role in supplying gold's innumerable uses, the industry must balance economic growth with environmental sustainability.
