Pinot Noir has been cultivated in Burgundy, France, for over a thousand years. The Cistercian monks were among the earliest to recognize the importance of terroir — how soil, climate, and aspect affect the character of wine. They meticulously recorded their findings, and over centuries, Burgundy became a region of intense viticultural focus. The result is a landscape unlike any other in the wine world.

What sets Burgundy apart is not just the grape but the mosaic of vineyards — a direct result of Napoleonic inheritance laws. These laws required estates to be divided equally among heirs, fragmenting vineyards into tiny parcels. Today, it's common for a single Grand Cru vineyard like Clos de Vougeot to be divided among dozens of owners, each bottling a unique expression of the same land.

This fragmentation makes Burgundy deeply complex and highly collectible. Wines range from ethereal and floral to earthy and brooding, depending on the vineyard and producer.
