Rum's history is as sweet and dark as the spirit itself. It all begins with sugarcane, one of the most globally significant crops ever cultivated. Originally from Southeast Asia, sugarcane made its way through trade and colonization to the Caribbean, South America, and eventually the American colonies and beyond. As sugar plantations flourished in the Caribbean, so did molasses — a sticky byproduct of sugar production.
