LOS ANGELES - June 18, 2025 - PRLog -- Los Angeles — Wayne State University and biotech company EndoDNA have announced a research collaboration to personalize mental health treatments using cannabinoid science. Backed by major grants, the studies will explore how the endocannabinoid system and CBD may support suicide prevention and anxiety relief.
Tackling Urgent Mental Health Needs

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among U.S. teens, and anxiety disorders affect nearly one in five adults. This partnership aims to shift mental health care from trial-and-error prescribing to data-driven, personalized treatment.

Study 1: Suicide Risk in Adolescents

The first study, funded by a One Mind Rising Star Award, investigates how endocannabinoid signaling influences brain activity during emotion regulation in teens. Led by Dr. Hilary Marusak, Associate Professor at Wayne State School of Medicine, it seeks to identify biomarkers for suicidal thoughts and behaviors.

"This research isn't just academic—it could help save young lives," said Dr. Marusak. "We're combining brain imaging, genetics, and emotion science to predict and prevent suicide risk in vulnerable youth."

Study 2: CBD + CBT for Anxiety

The second study, funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), will test whether cannabidiol (CBD)—administered as the FDA-approved drug Epidiolex—can enhance the effects of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in adults with generalized anxiety disorder. Neuroimaging and biomarker data will track how the brain responds to treatment.

"This is where science meets precision wellness," said Len May, CEO and Co-Founder of EndoDNA. "By blending genomics, cannabinoids, and AI, we're building a smarter path to mental health."

Innovation at the Intersection of Genetics and Neuroscience

What makes this collaboration unique is its integration of biometric, genetic, and AI-driven insights into clinical trials. EndoDNA's patented technology matches individuals to optimal wellness strategies using their DNA and real-time biomarkers, while Wayne State brings deep clinical research expertise in neurodevelopment and trauma.

Initial findings are expected in late 2026 and will be submitted to peer-reviewed journals.
