UAH I²C Launch's AURA: A Collaborative Open-Source AI Initiative for Healthcare Innovation

HUNTSVILLE, AL — June 5, 2025

The University of Alabama in Huntsville's Invention to Innovation Center (I²C), in collaboration with Huntsville Hospital and TekFive, Inc., has announced the launch of AURA (Accessible Unified Research in AI) — a pioneering open-source initiative under the AI Research Collaborative (ARC). AURA is designed to accelerate the development of responsible, community-driven AI solutions, starting with healthcare.

The partnership was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding that commits all three institutions to co-develop, test, and deploy open-source AI tools within a live clinical environment.

"This partnership enables us to develop AI solutions that benefit not only our patients but also the wider healthcare community.

AURA is ARC's flagship initiative, made possible in part by grant funding from Innovate Alabama, and leverages UAH's academic leadership, industry collaboration, and real-world pilot programs.

TekFive will serve as AURA's technical lead, integrating open-source AI tools into clinical workflows.

Looking ahead, AURA will expand beyond healthcare to other critical sectors, including manufacturing and defense, establishing a scalable model for AI innovation grounded in transparency, collaboration, and impact.
