Shields Health Installs AI-Powered MRI in Framingham to Address Long Local Wait Times

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. - June 4, 2025 - PRLog -- On Wednesday, June 4, Shields Health will install a 10,000-pound GE SIGNA™ Artist MRI system at its Framingham location, marking a major milestone in advanced imaging access for the MetroWest region. The crane delivery will take place from 7:00 to 8:30 a.m. at 14 Cochituate Road and is open to press.

The installation comes at a crucial moment for local health care. MetroWest MRI, previously the only other dedicated MRI provider in Framingham, closed quietly in March, leaving patients in the region facing longer wait times and fewer options. With the addition of this new machine, Shields' Framingham site becomes the first in the network to host two AI-enabled MRI systems, allowing for a projected 20% increase in patient capacity.

The GE SIGNA™ Artist offers dramatically shorter scan times—cutting some procedures in more than half—and features feet-first imaging to reduce claustrophobia. It also uses GE HealthCare's deep learning reconstruction technology (AIR Recon DL) for clearer imaging and faster processing, all while reducing helium usage by up to 67%.

Shields Health first introduced AI MRI at its Framingham site in 2020, making it the first site in the world to offer AI-enabled MRI to patients. This newest installation continues the company's commitment to upgrading all 37 locations with AI-powered imaging.

Despite these significant technology investments, Shields maintains its reputation as one of the most affordable providers in Massachusetts, particularly compared to large Boston hospitals.
