Innovative Driving Simulator Breaks Down Barriers for Young Australians with Disabilities

Support & Connect's My Drive School Simulator Empowers Independence Through Safe Learning Environment

ADELAIDE, Australia - May 28, 2025 - PRLog -- Support & Connect has unveiled an innovative driving simulator program specifically designed to help young people with disabilities overcome anxiety and build confidence before getting behind the wheel on public roads. Developed in partnership with My Drive School and funded by the Lions Club, this custom-built simulator installed in a Ford Falcon offers a comprehensive learning environment that removes traditional barriers to driving independence.

"I found a common trend in my participants was that they had a lot of anxiety around driving, especially on-road," explains Dylan Blackley, Director of Support & Connect. "It's a massive step going from no experience to driving on the road, so we created this simulator as a stepping stone."

The simulator features advanced technology donated by the Lions Club, including a steering wheel, pedals, indicators, and a TV screen that extends into the windscreen, creating a realistic driving experience without the associated risks. Participants work through six progressive modules covering road rules, driving skills, and emergency scenarios.

For young people with disabilities, the simulator addresses specific challenges that traditional driving lessons might present. "Having access to the simulator over several weeks or months allows them to hone their skills without worrying about a test or crashing a vehicle," notes Blackley.

Each month, ten participants use the simulator, with sessions consistently booked out. One success story involves 16-year-old Matthew, who completed all modules and reported feeling "a lot more confident" about taking the next step toward obtaining his license.

"Being able to drive is a massive goal for any young individual, but for people with disabilities, it's about independence – driving themselves to appointments, seeing friends, or attending events," explains Blackley.

The driving simulator is available to all individuals, regardless of NDIS participation. For those with NDIS plans, sessions are charged under core funding. Bookings can be made through supportandconnect.com.au.

"To anyone feeling nervous about learning to drive, I would say it's a very common feeling. Our simulator provides a stepping stone to gaining your license and your independence."
