Dylan Blackley, Director of Support & Connect, identified significant service gaps for young people in the region, particularly around mental health support and employment preparation. The new counselling service specifically targets young males, an underserved demographic in regional mental health services. "I noticed that there's probably not any really young males out there that connect and bond with the younger kids. So that's sort of the gap I'm trying to fill," said Blackley. The mobile counselling service removes traditional barriers by offering home and school visits, addressing transportation challenges that often prevent young people from accessing mental health support. One client receives sessions at home, while another meets at school during arranged times. Blackley has already seen positive results, with one parent reporting significant changes in their son after just eight sessions. "That was pretty cool to hear. It means we're doing something right," he said. The SLES program addresses workforce preparation for school leavers through a comprehensive year-long curriculum. Operating with a one-to-four ratio, the program covers essential employment skills including communication, body language, resume writing, interview techniques, and practical work experience through community volunteering. "We can provide the essential or fundamental skills they need to find and keep a job," Blackley explained. "Something that they probably don't get taught as much at school." Led by mentor Brody, the program combines classroom learning with hands-on community experiences. A typical week includes team bonding, interactive skills testing, community visits to practice communication, and volunteer work such as pumpkin picking for local food banks. Both services maintain Support & Connect's core philosophy of goal-oriented, personalised support while addressing specific community needs beyond traditional disability services. "I'm always looking to add new services that I see that are missing in the Riverland," Blackley said. "I like to look at all the barriers as a whole and try and provide something that has less barriers."
