DUISBURG, Germany - May 5, 2025 - PRLog -- Duisburg, Germany After a traumatic  injury and a rapid switch from Lexapro (Escitalopram) to Cymbalta (Duloxetine) in late 2022, Christoph Muth, a 50-year-old man from Germany, developed a life-altering and extremely rare neurological condition. What began as a withdrawal reaction soon turned into a complex, multisystemic disorder involving his nervous system, immune system, and metabolism.

Over the past 18 months, Christoph has experienced progressive and disabling symptoms including severe small fiber neuropathy, autonomic dysfunction (including vagus nerve impairment), tremors, visual disturbances, and episodes of altered consciousness. His condition has led to partial loss of mobility, chronic pain, and continuous inner agitation. Despite extensive consultations with leading medical centers, no comprehensive treatment has yet been implemented.

Recent diagnostics revealed rare autoimmune findings, including NMDA receptor antibodies, anti-recoverin antibodies, and GPCR autoantibodies – pointing to overlapping autoimmune encephalitis and post-SSRI withdrawal syndrome (PAWS). In addition, neuroimaging showed gliosis, hippocampal atrophy, and brainstem abnormalities suggestive of neurodegeneration.

Christoph's case is believed to be one of the first documented instances combining long-term antidepressant withdrawal with autoimmune-triggered neurological damage. While similar cases are occasionally reported, the severity and multisystem involvement make his situation particularly urgent and medically significant.

Christoph and his family are now calling for public attention, expert collaboration, and international medical engagement. A dedicated campaign is underway to raise funds for specialized immunological and neurological treatments abroad, including experimental therapies not available in Germany.
