Recent layoffs have impacted numerous industries nationwide, with companies like Meta, Amazon, and Goldman Sachs announcing significant workforce reductions. According to Intellizence, layoffs have increased by 20% in the past six months, with the tech industry being particularly hard hit, experiencing over 100,000 job cuts. This unsettling trend leaves many workers facing unexpected career transitions and the challenge of navigating the job market during uncertain times.

Things affected workers should know:

1.) Check out your company's employee handbook and/or your employment agreement with the company (if you have one) to find out what's owed to you. What's the company policy on accrued — but unused — benefits? Are you entitled to cash out unused vacation time, or is it "use it or lose it"?

2.) The company should provide you with information about continuing your health insurance coverage under the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) law. If the company has more than 20 employees, your employer is required by law to offer health insurance coverage through COBRA to terminated employees for up to 18 months. However, you will need to pay for this coverage yourself.

3.) While you may need a few days to process what's happening, don't delay working on the "tools" of your job search (Resume, Cover Letter, Resume Follow-up Letter, Thank You Letter, Interview Follow-up Letter, LinkedIn Profile, Career Bio, etc.). Remember: The longer you are unemployed, the harder it can be to find a new role.
