NEHRU PLACE, India - Feb. 8, 2024 - PRLog -- Fused deposition modeling (FDM), also referred to as material extrusion additive manufacturing, utilizes polymers as its raw material in the form of filament. The filament undergoes heating to reach a molten state and is subsequently extruded through the machine's nozzle, typically found in 3D printers. The nozzle head possesses three degrees of freedom (DoF) to accurately deposit the extruded polymer onto the build plate following instructions encoded in G-code.

Continuous feeding of the filament through the extruder and nozzle is facilitated by two rollers rotating in opposite directions. Layer-by-layer deposition of the material onto the build plate continues until the desired shape and size of the product are achieved. Throughout this process, the printer nozzle moves back and forth based on the spatial coordinates outlined in the original CAD model within the G-code files.

In certain FDM systems, multiple extrusion nozzles can be employed, particularly when components with compositional gradients are necessary. The resolution and efficacy of the extrusion process heavily rely on the properties of the thermoplastic filament. Consequently, various 3D printers are tailored to accommodate specific filament materials. Notably, many low-cost FDM 3D printers are capable of processing only one type of thermoplastic, with polylactic acid (PLA) being the most prevalent material.

Upon completion of the printing process, the components are typically situated on the build plate, which can be removed by either snapping off or soaking in a detergent, contingent upon the type of thermoplastic utilized. Subsequently, the printed components may undergo surface cleaning, sanding, painting, or milling to enhance both their appearance and functionality.
