Thar Process Adds New Supercritical CO2 Continuous Extraction Technology

Utilizing upcycled CO2 as the solvent, Thar Process recently deployed process-scale SFE with counter-current-column technology for remediation of hydrocarbons from water and recapture of high value oils from from waste mixtures.

PITTSBURGH - Sept. 28, 2023 - PRLog -- Pittsburgh, PA, USA  – Thar Process, a global leader in the design and manufacture of advanced technologies for the extraction and purification of natural products, today announced the development of a new Continuous Counter-Current extraction (SFE-CCC) technology for the remediation of hydrocarbons from water.

SFE-CCC has a number of advantages over traditional hydrocarbon remediation technologies, including:
  • It is more efficient and effective at removing hydrocarbons from water.
  • It uses CO2 - a clean waste byproduct - to remove waste
  • It is a more environmentally friendly process, as it does not use any toxic chemicals.
  • It is a scalable process that can be used to treat large volumes of water.
Thar Process's new SFE-CCC technology is currently being used to remediate hydrocarbon-contaminated water and separate oil from terpenes from natural extracts. The company is also working to develop new applications for the technology, such as the remediation of soil and sediment.

"We are excited to announce the development of our new SFE-CCC technology for hydrocarbon remediation," said Todd Palcic, CEO of Thar Process. "This technology has the potential to revolutionize the way that hydrocarbon contamination is treated. It is more efficient, effective, and environmentally friendly than traditional remediation technologies."

Additional Information

Thar Process's SFE-CCE technology works by passing supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2) through a column containing the hydrocarbon-contaminated water. The CO2 dissolves the hydrocarbons, which are then carried out of the column. The CO2 and hydrocarbons are then separated using a pressure reduction valve into a series of proprietary separators. The CO2 is recycled and the hydrocarbons are collected.

The SFE-CCC process can be used to remove a wide range of hydrocarbons from water, including petroleum hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and aromatic hydrocarbons. The process is also effective at removing hydrocarbons from water that is high in salinity or other contaminants.
