Jaguars: Surging Campbell Leaves Practice at Stadium with Concussion

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Aug. 7, 2023 - PRLog -- Before Tyson Campbell was sidelined Saturday with a concussion, he was making his case as one of the league's top cornerbacks during training camp.

Now he is out until he clears the team's concussion protocol program. A return is possible for next Saturday's first preseason game at Dallas.

His training camp leading up to his injury supported him being considered one of NFL's top young cornerbacks entering the 2023 season with head coach Doug Pederson saying he has embraced being in that conversation.

""Me and Gregory Junior and the other young guys in the group talk a lot just about coming into your second year and being fortunate enough to have the same defense you did your rookie year allows the game to slow down for you tremendously," Campbell said.

This season he is looking forward to maintaining a clean technique throughout the game. Campbell said that means honing his technique and being technically sound each play.

The media has enjoyed creating a conceived rivalry between Campbell and wide receiver Calvin Ridley.

"It's been great, man. I love every bit of it. He's going to make Sundays so much easier for me and I'm going to do the same for him," added Campbell. "I'm just competitive, I love competing with anybody. He's a great player and I just love competing at the end of the day. That's just how we are, we love competing and I love it."

Last year saw him record 70 tackles (55 solo), three interceptions, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries and one touchdown.

"I just want to show that I'm a great football player. That's it. I want to prove to myself that I could be the best corner in the NFL. That's the mindset you must have at defensive back, and I just want to win, so I'm going to do whatever it takes to win. That's the mindset, to be relentless."

Campbell was a second-round selection by the Jaguars in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Campbell has started 32 games in two seasons. He is looking forward to continuing where he left off last season.

"When the season's over, you look back on how the season went, what you could've done better, and you try to improve on that. Learn not to make the same mistakes twice and work on different techniques. Then physical wise, get your technique better, get in better shape, get your speed and strength up, and work on your body so you can play in late January and February."
