Australia Plans to Completely Overhaul its Immigration System and Make it Easier for Skilled Workers

Temporary skilled visa holders who had previously been refused the option to seek for permanent residency will be permitted to do so by the end of this year, according to O'Neil. However, it will not increase Australia's yearly intake of permanent migrants, he stated.

In September, Australia increased its annual intake of permanent migrants to 195,000, a 35,000 increase, to assist companies dealing with significant worker shortages, and vowed extra employees and cash to expedite visa processing.

The government announced on July 1 that the migrant pay threshold for temporary skilled workers will be raised to A$70,000 ($46,250) from A$53,900, which had been frozen since 2013.
