By: Seaside Art Gallery When you buy an etching, you don't always get to see the steps involved in creating it…from sketch... to plate... to press. Sketch to Plate… "When I created this limited edition 'Deep Marsh at Bodie' etching," says Hunter, "I began with a pencil sketch on paper. Then I took a clean smooth polished zinc plate, and painted it with acid resistant coating. "I dd a freehand drawing with a sharp needle through the coating so each line exposes the plate until the whole image of 'Deep Marsh at Bodie' is done," explains Hunter. …the Pressing Hunter puts the plate in nitric acid. The nitric acid bites away at the metal and recesses the lines he drew. Hunter takes the plate out of the acid to remove and removes the coating. "The plate isn't the artwork," says Hunter. "The print from the plate is the final definitive artwork." He smears special ink over the plate and into the etched lines. He runs the plate through his printing press..creating original etched art.
