Thanet to Tasmania: a bicentennial book

200 years ago, on 7 August 1822, a family from St Nicholas-at-Wade sailed to Van Diemen's Land...

ST NICHOLAS-AT-WADE, U.K. - Aug. 6, 2022 - PRLog -- A new book tells the fascinating tale of the Curling family, relatives of Sir Charles James Napier, who were caught by the agricultural depression following the Napoleonic Wars, and had to abandon their farming life in an East Kent village to sail to the other end of the world.

The Curlings and their in-laws the Oakleys started out as prominent members of local society - Mayors of Deal across the generations, prosperous shipping agents, freemasons. However, their fortunes declined rapidly in the economic downturn that followed the war, and eventually they embarked on a five-month trip to join a new society of settlers.

The author, LucyAnn Curling, is a descendant who has devoted many years to tracking down, transcribing and correlating old documents from public libraries, private collections and family archives around the world. This is only the first chapter in the story, though: further books in the series "Curling Wisps & Whispers of History" are already in preparation.

The book was published by Ozaru Books - a boutique publishing house based just a few hundred yards away from the Curling family's ancient home Shuart Farm. It contains numerous full-colour illustrations, and full references and indices for social historians and genealogists, but is also a good read for anyone interested in late 18th and early 19th century history. It is available from any bookshop worldwide, using the ISBN 978-1-915174-02-4.
