GRAY, Tenn. - July 26, 2022 - PRLog -- Since pandemic restrictions have lifted, homeschool support groups and co-ops have opened their doors wide to droves of new homeschoolers in their communities. From state-run organizations with decades of experience to locally run groups with dedicated volunteers, homeschooling groups are available throughout the US, providing support, resources, and educational opportunities for homeschooling families. Brand-new groups and organizations are also on the rise. Seeing the needs of their communities, new parents are coming out of the woodwork and taking on leadership roles. "Homeschooling has changed drastically over the years. Though the fundamentals remain the same, we see the changes, and we strive to meet homeschooling families as they shift with the times," stated Gena Suarez, publisher of The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine.

Such shifts include how many of their children they are homeschooling. When homeschooling was popularized among many religious communities in the '80s, most homeschooling families brought all of their children home. In the modern era, some families opt to pull only one child out for specific reasons.

According to Dr. Brian Ray, another change is that homeschooling is quickly gaining popularity among minorities. About 41% of homeschool families are non-white/non-Hispanic.

The most obvious shift relates to the sheer number of families choosing to home educate since the onset of the pandemic. While about 2.5 million students were homeschooled pre-pandemic in the spring of 2019, the number currently hovers around 3.7 million (NHERI statistics).

Additionally, parents are now opting to customize their children's education using a variety of educational materials becoming available from outside resources. SchoolhouseTeachers.com, for example, ties together course materials from over 200 lesson designers that parents can use in their home education. Drawing on experience from active teachers, retired teachers, authors, researchers, and those with bachelors, masters, and doctorate degrees, SchoolhouseTeachers.com allows parents to home educate in a way that meets the needs of the individual.
