If the substances appear like an even field of snow, it is most likely dust. If there is clumping, like the leavings from a pencil eraser, it may be microbial growth. The mold that grows on the surface of a material can be cleaned using a paper towel dampened with a solution that makes the towel "tacky". This solution can be a few drops of dish soap in a cup of water, glass cleaner, or a Lysol™ cleaning wipe depending on the surface to be cleaned. Do not use a bleach solution. The mold might sense a chemical attack and sporulate to save itself. Also, spray or dampen the cloth, do not spray the colony. The physical act of spraying can cause the colony to sporulate. If necessary, the area can then be sealed with a product like Kilz™ or Zinsser BIN™ and re-painted.
