The End of Presidential Debates

GOP pullout changes presidential campaigns, as debates have altered the course of history, says political historian William S. Bike
WASHINGTON - May 2, 2022 - PRLog -- The Republican National Committee's decision to prohibit the GOP's presidential nominee from participating in debates sponsored by the Commission on Presidential Debates is a break from tradition — but only recent tradition, says political historian and author William S. Bike in a recent article on

Bike is the author of Winning Political Campaigns, a how-to book on all aspects of political campaigning. The book is a comprehensive handbook for planning, organizing and executing a successful campaign for elective office

Modern-era presidential debates "really began in 1976 between Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter, and since then they have become such a part of the fabric of the Presidential campaigns that the public expects them," Bike wrote.

Now, however, "Most likely thanks to the Republicans' decision, Presidential debates are as dead as the front-porch campaign or the back-of-the-train whistle-stop stump speech," Bike wrote.
