Open-source intelligence (OSINT) is information gathered from published sources for intelligence purposes. The term "open" in the intelligence community refers to overt, publicly available sources. It has nothing to do with open-source or communal intelligence.

The core phrase in the OSINT idea is information, especially free information. It makes no difference if it's in newspapers, blogs, web pages, tweets, social networking cards, photos, podcasts, or videos, as long as it's public, free, and lawful.
