The rules on the plastics ban were supposed to come into effect in 2021 to reduce those incredible numbers. Unfortunately, they were pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At last, on January 1, 2022, they came into effect. The City of Vancouver now requires all businesses to charge at least $0.25 for disposable cups, $0.15 for paper bags, and $1 for a new reusable shopping bag. Restaurants can choose to charge more than the baseline fee. According to the City of Vancouver, fees are meant to promote reusable items and reduce single-use waste.

To avoid paying fees, customers can bring their own reusable bags and cups, and this trend is gaining popularity among the public.
