LOWELL, Mass. - Jan. 31, 2022 - PRLog -- The American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC/MA) has named Arup as a Finalist for the 2021 Engineering Excellence Award for their work on the Lowell Judicial Center.

Located within the Lowell National Historic Park, the new, 265,000-square-foot  Justice Center forms the cornerstone of Lowell's Hamilton Canal District development master plan. The high performance building is home to 17 new courtrooms with state-of-the-art security and technology features. The courthouse is designed to only use 40% the energy of a typical facility due to the many sustainability features including a tight building envelope, coupled with daylight-maximizing glazing, chilled beams and displacement ventilation, and, photo-voltaic panels. The project is certified LEED Platinum.

"We were able to respond immediately to the challenge of creating a low energy building without the ramp-up time other firms may have required both due to our project team's knowledge of and commitment to sustainable and energy efficient design. The result of this collaboration sets a new standard for agency staff to apply as they move forward in implementing sustainable design, construction, and operations in state buildings," said Mark Walsh-Cooke, Arup Principal and Project Director.

The 2021 Engineering Excellence Awards were recently announced at the virtual ACEC/MA Engineering Excellence and Awards Gala. The awards celebrate innovation, ingenuity, and excellence in engineering achievement.

"The ACEC/MA Engineering Excellence Awards Competition recognizes engineering achievements that demonstrate the highest degree of merit and ingenuity," said Scott A. Miller PE, President of ACEC/MA and Vice President and Regional Vice President for Haley Ward. "We celebrate this year's outstanding engineering achievements, congratulate our winners and thank them for their contributions to improving the quality of our everyday lives."
