New X-ray Technology Leads to Prestigious Award for Industrial Scientist

WASHINGTON - Oct. 18, 2021 - PRLog -- What started out as an academic investigation 15 years ago has led to a new way to see inside the human body. Making low-dose 3D x-rays through a process called "tomosynthesis" has been impractical for decades due to a lack of suitable x-ray sources. Dr. Gil Travish's inventions are turning these promised 3D images into reality. In recognition of this work and related work in particle accelerators, the American Physical Society has recognized Dr. Travish as a Fellow, an honor bestowed on no more than 0.5% of the Society's membership each year.

The x-ray approach has already disrupted the way people and companies look at 3D imaging and tomosynthesis in the clinic. It has gone from a historical curiosity that pre-dates CT to an accepted and clinically verified method of imaging. Dr. Travish's pioneering work on this approach, physics and technology could impact all our lives through improved imaging and diagnostics and led to over 200 patents. It has also garnered recognition by several investors, and funding agencies worldwide

Dr. Travish's Fellowship is supported by the APS Forum on Industrial & Applied Physics (FIAP). His Fellowship citation reads:

"For contributions to the development of advanced accelerators, radiation production from charged particle beams, and for translating this research into applications in medical imaging and 3D tomosynthesis x-ray sources."

Dr. Matthew C. Thompson, Chair of FIAP, stated, "There is no doubt in my mind that Dr. Travish is worthy of the honor of APS fellowship several times over. His achievements as an industrial physicist, as well as his dedication to our community, are of the highest caliber."

When the award was first disclosed this month, Dr. Travish stated, "I am grateful to my colleagues, who have taken significant time and effort to nominate me for this distinction. It is good to see Industrial Physics being recognized. This Fellowship represents the work of thousands who worked over decades to advance the many disciplines applied to make these inventions possible."
