Using Ground Penetrating Radar to Detect Unmarked Graves

BRISBANE, Australia - Aug. 25, 2021 - PRLog -- Over the last 100 plus years, Australia has had a history with regards to its extreme weather cycle and uncontrolled crises including:

• Dust Storms
• Flooding

In some way or another, all of the above examples have had a catastrophic effect on society and each of our communities within any of the affected areas. After several case studies and various work fronts completed by 123 Locateit (part of the Leaktech group), our conclusion is that due to years of excessive and uncontrollable damage across the country there has been an increase in the demand for Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) at cemeteries across the country. There are many reasons why there has been an increase in demand for this service, including the below:

• Extreme Weather i.e. headstones damaged and washed away or moved by flood waters, excessive dust covering grave markers, making it difficult to relocate the graves;
• Construction works completed previously and a lack of drawings or design to refer back on;
• Investigations and mapping of various plots to determine current grave alignments, positions, depths etc; and
• Investigations and mapping of cemeteries to determine areas for future plots.

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is a non-destructive and non-invasive geophysical technique for rapidly imaging subsurface and producing high resolution sections to determine depths, locations and size of the area requiring mapping.

Our workforce is DYBD certified and we are proud members of NULCA. Recently 123 Locateit successfully completed an archaeological GPR survey of two separate cemeteries in south west Queensland, one which was a historical cemetery that dated back to when the town was initially populated.
