Follow on Google News | HONK! 2021 is indeed happening, safe-outdoors-in-person, in a Boston-area neighborhood near youHONK!: 16th annual festival of activist street bands, w/over 15 locally-based HONK! street bands, joining forces w/local community orgs, in a rousing unified effort to achieve the common goal for all residents::"Health, Hope, …. and HONK!"
By: HONK! Festival The plans are already in motion, with HONK! organizers collaborating with local community groups, to allow for this year's HONK! to convene right on their own neighborhood's doorsteps. To be held outdoors, in-person, on-site, in many small gathering places within the local area's decentralized neighborhoods. This year, HONK!'s intention is to reach communities that have not been able to participate in the past, for example Nubian Square in Roxbury, while also retaining HONK!'s historic connection to Davis Square in Somerville. HONK! 2021. With flexible safety precautions all in place, adaptable and adept enough to pivot, depending on what is required for neighbors to gather safely at that time. This year, all the participating HONK! bands will hail from nearby locations. The rule of thumb being that all participants will need to be local enough, so that at the end of any given HONK! day, they can all return home and turn in on their very own beds. HONK! 2021 will be the year to achieve its smallest carbon footprint ever, while still delivering multiple neighborhood events co-sponsored by grassroots community organizations, and featuring over 15 local brass and percussion bands who spread joy and justice wherever they perform. HONK! always strives to think globally by acting locally. But this year the plan is to delve even deeper into neighborhoods that constitute the hyperlocal communities that make up Boston and its adjacent cities. This year, HONK! is collaborating and organizing side-by-side with activist groups right on their own neighborhood turf. During HONK!, street bands will join them where they live. HONK! Sunday (Oct. 10th) will be devoted to presenting a series of online workshops on topics of interest to the HONK! community. Some of these will be internal-only, and some will be open to the general public. The full list of participating neighborhoods, local bands, and public workshops will be available soon after Labor Day weekend. Basic listings information: HONK!
