CHAM, Switzerland - March 17, 2021 - PRLog -- Studies indicate that the chances of developing breast cancer are determined based on several risk factors. Prime example is old age, as breast cancer cases are found in women above 50 years old.

These factors have different effects based on different individuals. Knowing these risks may not eliminate the possibility, but being aware would at least lessen the risks.

Things you CAN'T avoid:

* Getting older -  the risk increases proportional to age and most cases are diagnosed after the age of 50.
* Medicals history of the family – a woman whose 1st degree relative is diagnosed with ovarian or breast cancer is more exposed to the risk.
* Personal reproductive history – women who only start menopausal period after the age of 55, or women getting their periods before the age of 12 have a higher risk in developing breast cancer due to being exposed to hormones longer than other women.
* Having dense breasts – this means your breast have more connective tissues compared to fatty tissues which also heightens the risk of getting breast cancer.
* Genetic mutation – parents may mutate their genes in their life and these genes are passed on to their children. Genes such as BRCA1 and BRCA2, when passed down exposes the individual inheriting them to greater risk of developing breast cancer.

Things you CAN avoid:

* No physical activity –  yes, women with no physical activity has higher risk in developing breast cancer.
* Drinking excessive alcohol – higher alcohol ingestion means higher risk of developing breast cancer.
* Obesity after menopause – research shows that menopausal women who are overweight have higher risk than women with normal weight.
* Reproductive history – not being able to breastfeed, first pregnancy after 30 years of age and never having a full term pregnancy also increases the risk.
* Hormone intake – certain oral contraceptives (pre-menopausal stage) and other hormone intake replacement therapy (menopausal stage) also increases the risk of getting breast cancer especially when taken for extended periods.

While we cannot control the unavoidable circumstances, we can focus on what we can control to lessen our exposure and minimize the risk. Taking care of ourselves is still the key in lowering the exposure to the risk factors, and you can always seek a doctor for recommendation and screening.
