How to Spot and Address Girdling Roots

TORONTO - March 10, 2021 - PRLog -- Trees are capable for living for thousands of years in the proper conditions and are very majestic beings. The older a tree is, the deeper the roots run and the wider it and the roots are. Most properties have some trees on them. When we look at the trees, our expectation is to see the roots reaching out into the landscape and intertwined together. You should not be seeing a tree whose roots are strangling it around the trunk. This is known as gridling and we are going to go over some solutions for this.

What Is Girdling?

This is when a tree's roots wrap around its trunk instead of growing out away from the tree. This can look like the roots are trying to reach out of the ground to get away from something or to strangle the tree. If this is left unattended, eventually the roots will stop moisture and nutrients from getting to the tree and will cause the tree to die. You might see stem gridling roots wrapping partially or completely around a tree trunk. You will usually see this above the ground but sometimes gridling can occur under the ground, out of sight.
