By: AdvisorSmith To find the states where residents are the least insured, AdvisorSmith used data from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey. The survey's findings helped determine the percentage of the population in each state not covered by health insurance. The states were then ranked based on the proportion of the population that was not insured which were used for AdvisorSmith's findings. The study found that the top 15 most uninsured states had 10 percent or more of their population without health insurance. Also, the top five states were all located in the South. The state where residents had the highest percentage of uninsured was Texas. Almost one in five Texans lacked health insurance coverage. The top 15 states with the least uninsured residents had over 93 percent of their residents covered. Massachusetts came in at number one, where only three percent of the population lacked health insurance.
