-- inABLE.org is set to host the first ever virtual Inclusive Africa Conference 2020 on October 8 & 9 from 9 - 11:30 am EAT. Sponsored by MasterCard Foundation, Safaricom PLC, Facebook, Ford Foundation and Google, the theme of the conference is promoting digital accessibility in Africa. At least 500 attendees from across Africa are anticipated to join in this inaugural online event intended to increase awareness of the needs and rights of people with disabilities to access digital information, including public safety, health and remote learning education that is presently inaccessible.
The Inclusive Africa Conference will bring together global and local knowledgeable experts from different sectors to showcase inclusive design, mobile accessibility, and digital accessibility in primary and high school education, higher education, financial services, social media, employment and more. inABLE Executive Director Irene Mbari-Kirika emphasizes that now is the right time to start formulating inclusive policies that put people with disabilities at the center of inclusive design. She explains, "during the pandemic, people with disabilities have struggled to access vital digital information that could affect their wellbeing, education and employment; this disconnection exposed the gaps that need to be filled in technology and internet-accessibility in Africa.
On Day 2, participants can choose from a menu of four breakout sessions, including: Higher Education, Employment, Accessibility in Social Media, and Digital Accessibility in Financial Services. During the event closing-ceremony the Digital Accessibility Innovations Awards
winners will be announced, recognizing the best inclusive Africa innovations.
