It highlighted the cities with the most diversity based on the bureau's seven major race categories, along with Hispanic or Latino origin. To rank the cities and discover the most diverse populations, AdvisorSmith used a proportion of each city's population from each race category to develop a diversity score. Some interesting findings from the study are: • Oakland, CA was the most diverse city in the U.S. The city had a diversity score of 75 and has a population that identifies as 35% White, 23% Black or African American, 15% Asian, 1% Pacific Islander or Native Hawaiian, 1% Native American, 18% Some Other Race, and 7% Multiracial. Twenty-six percent of residents identified as Hispanic or Latino. • The state of California had the most diverse cities. California had four or more cities on each list from the top 10 small, midsize, and large cities. On the top 10 large cities list, all California cities were in Northern California. • Washington state had two cities in our top five most diverse cities list. Kent and Federal Way, WA are two cities that experienced rapid growth in the 1980s from agricultural industries. Now the area is home to manufacturing and distribution companies, along with REI, Amazon, and Boeing.
